Located on California’s Central Coast, Pismo Beach was an overnight stop after driving Highway 1 from Monterey to Los Angeles on our West Coast USA road trip, and we wished we had another night here to explore and see even more of what this pretty seaside town has to offer.
Things to Do in Pismo Beach
Monarch Butterfly Grove – A visit to the Monarch Butterfly Grove was a highlight of our visit to Pismo Beach. Visitors here can view the thousands of Monarch butterflies that migrate to Pismo Beach during the winter months.
Play at the beach – Young kids will love the Dinosaur Caves Park to burn off some energy. Otherwise you can walk along the beach or the Pismo Beach Pier, spot wild otters swimming in the waves below the cliffs, and explore the tide pools at Eldwayen Ocean Park.
Watch the sunset – no matter where you are in Pismo Beach, you are guaranteed to catch a spectacular sunset over the ocean. Pull up a seat or grab a drink and watch the sun sink below the watery horizon.
Visit a winery or wine bar – wine lovers rejoice! There are a number of wineries in the surrounding area to visit, as well as wine bars within the town itself. Go for a drive to explore the cellar doors, or join a tour to taste the amazing array of wines on offer.
Go on an adventure – Nature lovers can hike the Pismo Preserve by foot, bike or horseback. For the more adventurous, go for a ride on an ATV or Dune Buggy over the sand dunes, or explore sea caves carved into the cliffs of Pismo Beach.

For our trip, we stayed at the Shore Cliff Hotel. Every room here has ocean views! Our family room was spacious and well-appointed, and breakfast was included in our booking. Click here for the latest prices and availability for the Shore Cliff Hotel.

Where To Eat In Pismo Beach
Pismo Beach is the perfect place to discover wine bars and clam chowder cafes as you wander the streets. For delicious meals, friendly staff and ocean-views as you dine, we highly recommend both Ventana Grill and the Flagship.
