Garden Island FREE CAMP – Clarence Point, Tasmania

Gardens Island is a fabulous free camp located right on the Tamar River at Clarence Point, Tasmania.

The Garden Island free camp has no amenities, so travellers need to be self-contained and take all rubbish with them. There are several trees on one side of the island for shade, and it is pet-friendly. Due to its location on the river, you may want to check the wind forecast before setting up an awning or annexe.

Fishing is popular here, and there is a boat ramp nearby in Clarence Point if you want to get the tinny out on the water. We also enjoyed seeing seals swimming right past our campsite!

Things to do near Garden Island

Beauty Point is a 15 minute drive south of Garden Island, and is a great spot to explore for a few hours. We visited Seahorse World here, and recommend taking a tour of this facility! The Platypus House is also located nearby, and there are numerous wineries in the area.

Further south is the mining town of Beaconsfield, and home to the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre. We highly recommend allowing a few hours to visit here, with interactive displays, gold panning for the kids, a working water wheel, history displays of the mine, plus information on the mine collapse and rescue in 2006.
