The Palms National Park

The Palms National Park, while small in size, is well worth a visit! The park protects an area of remnant rainforest and is home to a large stand of Picabeen palms. Enjoy the 650 metre walk through the palms and Bunya Pines, where you will cross bubbling springs, spot wildlife like bush turkeys, wallabies and echidnas, or even try wrapping your arms around a 500 year old Moreton Bay Fig and 300 year old Grey Gum.

Muntapa Tunnel

Just a short drive out of Cooyar, you can find the Muntapa Tunnel and remains of the railway construction camp. Built in 1911, the tunnel is 287 metres long, making it Australia’s longest single-bore railway tunnel, and is now home to a colony of bent-winged bats. Visitors can explore approximately 20 metres or so into the tunnel, and follow the interpretive signs around the construction camp remains to learn more about the railway history of the area.
